Everything You Need to Create Your Own Custom Badge
This page walks you through the custom badge process from start to finish so you know exactly what to send, what we can use, and how your badge moves from idea to finished product.
Custom badges are built using artwork provided by you. We do not create, draw, redraw, or recreate artwork in-house. What makes your badge custom is your artwork, your wording, your colors, and your details placed into our standard badge layout.
The process is simple: you send your artwork and details, we create a mockup for approval, you review it, and once approved, your badge goes into production after your order is placed.
Please read through this page before sending your artwork. It will save time, prevent confusion, and keep us all from playing the ancient and exhausting game of “can you use this screenshot?”

STEP 1 — Decide What You Want It to Say
Start with the wording. Tell us exactly what text you want on your badge.
- Top text for the badge.
- Bottom text, such as 4x4, offroad, trail names, numbers, or coordinates.
- Your vehicle’s name.
- A bold, funny, meaningful, or personal phrase.
- Your font choice from dafont.com, or you can tell us to use our standard font.
Spelling matters. What you send is exactly what gets used on your mockup, so please double-check names, numbers, and wording before sending your details.
STEP 2 — Send the Graphic, Not the Mockup
Your artwork is the most important part of your custom badge. We do not create, draw, redraw, or recreate artwork in-house. All artwork for custom badges must be provided by you.
That is what makes your badge custom: your artwork, placed into our standard badge layout.
All of our custom badges follow the same round badge structure, size, and overall style. What changes is the graphic, wording, colors, and details you send us.
What We Need
Send the graphic or artwork only. This means the main image, logo, mascot, animal, vehicle, flag, mountains, banner, wording, or design element you want featured on your badge.
What We Do Not Need
Do not send the full badge layout as your artwork file. We do not need the outer badge shape, badge border, 4x4 section, metal texture, shadows, or completed badge mockup.
If wording or a banner is part of the actual graphic you want featured, that is fine to include. We just need it as standalone artwork, not already placed inside a finished badge design.
A finished badge mockup is helpful for showing us your idea, but it is not the artwork file we need to create your badge. Mockups are flattened images, which means the artwork is already built into the full badge design and usually cannot be separated cleanly.
Artwork Files We Can and Cannot Use
To keep your badge clean and crisp, please send the best quality artwork file you have. Higher resolution is always better.
We Can Use
- High-resolution PNG with transparent background.
- High-resolution PNG with white background.
- High-resolution JPG.
- SVG.
- AI.
- EPS.
- Vector PDF.
We Cannot Use
- Finished badge mockups.
- Circle badge layouts.
- Images with the badge border already added.
- Images with a 4x4 section already built in.
- Metal texture mockups.
- Screenshots.
- Watermarked images.
- Small, blurry, or distorted files.
Small or blurry artwork will not magically become crisp because it is going on a badge. Tiny files stay tiny. Blurry files stay blurry. The universe refuses to be helpful here.
Using AI, Canva, Procreate, ChatGPT, or Other Design Programs
You are welcome to use AI or design programs to create your artwork. You can also send mockups to show us the overall look you are going for.
However, we cannot use the mockup image as the actual artwork file. We need the final graphic exported by itself in a high-quality format.
Helpful AI prompt:
“Create the graphic only. No badge mockup, no circle badge, no outer border, no 4x4 section, no metal texture, and no extra badge layout. Keep only the subject artwork and any banner/text that is part of the actual graphic. Transparent background if possible.”
When exporting your final artwork, a high-resolution PNG with a transparent background is usually best.
If you want simple edits or color changes made to the artwork, send the original vector file: SVG, AI, EPS, or vector PDF.
If you do not have a vector file, we may not be able to make changes to the artwork. In that case, you will need to provide artwork that already looks the way you want it to appear on your badge.
STEP 3 — Choose Your Colors
Color is where your badge starts to feel like yours. You can keep it clean and simple, add a color upgrade, or go with a full color upgrade depending on the look you want.
The examples below show the difference between our badge color upgrade options.
Badge Color Upgrade
Badge Full Color Upgrade
If you want a specific color, please provide the HEX or CMYK code for the exact color you want. This helps us get as close as possible instead of guessing.
We cannot match automotive paint colors. Vehicle paint and badge production are completely different worlds, and paint codes rarely translate cleanly to a finished badge.
Screens display color using light, physical products use pigment-based color, and stainless steel can affect how color appears. Even with exact color codes, an exact match is not guaranteed, but we will get as close as the badge world allows.
STEP 4 — Send Everything for Your Mockup
This is where everything comes together. Once we have your artwork and details, we’ll create a mockup so you can see how your badge will look before anything is made.
Please email everything to Orders@Custom4x4Badges.com.
- Your final artwork file, high-resolution and ready to use.
- The exact top text you want on the badge.
- The exact bottom text you want on the badge.
- Your font choice from dafont.com, or tell us to use our standard font.
- Color notes for the text, outer ring, base, and artwork.
- Any HEX or CMYK color codes if you are using specific shades.
- Any layout notes, such as edge text, center design, or logo placement.
Mockups are typically sent within 2-3 business days, and requests are handled in the order they are received.
The more complete and accurate the information you send upfront, the smoother this step goes. Missing artwork, unclear wording, or vague color requests will slow things down.
STEP 5 — Approve Your Mockup and Place Your Order
Review your mockup carefully. Check the spelling, colors, artwork placement, and overall layout. Once you approve the mockup, we’ll send your custom order link.
Please wait to place your order until your mockup has been approved.
Website orders require the approved mockup to be uploaded at checkout. Etsy orders require the approved mockup to be sent through messages.
Once your order is placed, your approved mockup is the file used for your custom badge. Please make sure everything is correct before approving.
Important: Mockup files are only kept on file for 2 weeks. If you place an order after that time, the mockup may no longer be available and you may need to start the mockup process again.
STEP 6 — Production
Once your mockup is approved and your order is placed, your badge goes into production.
Custom badges are made in the order they are received. During busy seasons, production can take up to 5 business days before your order ships.
We do not share step-by-step production details or behind-the-scenes methods. That part stays in the shop. What matters is that your badge is created, checked, packaged, and sent on its way.
STEP 7 — Shipping
Once your custom badge is complete, it is carefully packaged and handed off for delivery. We ship using USPS and UPS, and all available shipping options will be shown at checkout.
Choosing faster shipping does not skip the production line. It only affects how quickly the badge travels once it leaves the shop.
As soon as your order ships, you’ll receive tracking so you can follow its journey.
STEP 8 — Install, Admire, Show Off
- Clean the area really well. Alcohol works great.
- Hold the badge up and test the placement before removing the adhesive backing.
- Take a step back and make sure it is exactly where you want it.
- Peel the backing off the adhesive.
- Line it up carefully. Once it sticks, it sticks.
- Press firmly and hold for a few seconds.
- Step back and admire how much better everything looks now.
- Take photos and tag @Custom4x4Badges so we can admire it too.
